The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch, has declared an indefinite strike action over the alleged non-payment of full salaries to its members.
The decision was announced on Tuesday after an emergency congress held by the union. The branch chairman, Prof. Idou Keinde, and the secretary, Prof. Adesina Arikawe, confirmed that the strike would commence on Wednesday.
According to the union, the industrial action became necessary following the payment of what they described as “amputated salaries” to lecturers for the months of January and February. The lecturers claimed that members across the university’s two campuses — Akoka and Idi-Araba — received incomplete salary payments during the period.
ASUU noted that the situation is unacceptable and contrary to what is currently obtainable in other federal universities across the country.
As a result, the union has directed all its members to withdraw their services and stay away from their duty posts until their full salaries for the affected months are paid.
When contacted for a reaction, the university’s spokesperson, Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, requested that inquiries be sent via text message as she was in a meeting at the time. However, she had not responded to the message as of the time this report was filed.
