The Federal Government has announced that the National Examinations Council (NECO) will begin conducting Computer-Based Examinations (CBE) starting this year as part of major reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s examination system.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Conference Centre in Abuja.
WHY THE CHANGE IS IMPORTANT
According to the Minister, the introduction of computer-based examinations will help:
- Reduce examination malpractice
- Improve transparency and efficiency
- Enable real-time monitoring of candidates
- Detect suspicious activities during examinations
- Align Nigeria’s examination system with global standards
He described NECO as a major pillar in maintaining credibility and fairness in Nigeria’s education sector.
NECO’S GROWTH OVER THE YEARS
The NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, stated that the examination body has grown significantly over the past 25 years and is now conducting examinations in eight countries outside Nigeria.
He explained that NECO has improved its credibility through:
- Faster release of results
- Stronger examination security
- Digital verification systems
- Introduction of e-certificates
- Expansion of infrastructure and zonal offices
MORE DIGITAL REFORMS COMING
NECO also revealed plans to strengthen anti-exam malpractice measures and expand digital services across its operations.
The council noted that the move to computer-based examinations marks a new phase in modernizing educational assessment in Nigeria.
