What Is CAC Registration and Why Does Your Business Need It?
CAC stands for Corporate Affairs Commission. It is the government body that officially recognises businesses in Nigeria. If your business name is not registered with them, your business does not legally exist, no matter how long you have been operating.
There are two main types of registration:
Business Name Registration is for sole traders, freelancers, and small business owners. It is the most common type. Once registered, your business name is protected and nobody else can legally operate under the same name in Nigeria.

What happens after your business is registered?
If you registered a Business Name, you are required to send in a yearly report called an annual return to CAC before June 30 every year. It is a way of telling the government that your business is still active.
If you registered a Limited Liability Company (LLC), you also have to send in an annual return every year. The process is slightly different, but the idea is the same.
Both types of businesses must do this every year. If you miss it, you could face fines or other problems down the line.
